It appears as if Alice Cooper oft-discussed Hollywood Vampires covers project is taking one step closer to seeing the light of day. The rock legend will play the Rock in Rio festival this September under that moniker, with a band that includes Joe Perry and actor Johnny Depp (Mortdecai, The Lone Ranger).

Cooper broke the news on his website and, although the exact date hasn’t been determined, the band will make its debut on the same night that Queens of the Stone Age and System of a Down perform.  The sixth Brazilian edition of Rock in Rio will take place Sept. 18-20, 24-27.

Cooper has been talking up the Hollywood Vampires album as far back as the summer of 2012. Its name was the phrase given to he and his hard-partying musician friends that used to drink with together the early-to-mid-‘70s, a group that includes Keith Moon, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson. To date, Cooper has been silent about which songs he has recorded and who will appear on it, but he has revealed that it will be produced by Bob Ezrin.

“Bob came up with the idea, ‘Let’s concentrate it on all the guys that you drank with in L.A., the Hollywood Vampires, the ones that are all dead,’” he recently told Eddie Trunk. “I like the title ‘All My Dead Drunk Friends.’ It’s just offensive enough to work, but all those guys would have totally got it. They had the same sense of humor. If you told them you were going to do an album after they were gone called ‘All My Dead Drunk Friends,’ they would have died laughing.”

For an actor, Johnny Depp has an awful lot of credibility as a rock guitarist. over the past few years, he’s performed numerous times with Aerosmith, played blues guitar in a Paul McCartney video, is famously good buddies with Keith Richards, and was joined at one of his own gigs by Billy Gibbons. In 2011, he jammed onstage with Cooper, whom he once joked was the “ugliest woman I’ve ever seen.”
