‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Sarah Paulson Talks Lighter Tone, Female Empowerment

American Horror Story Coven Sarah Paulson Theme

Like the previous seasons of ‘American Horror Story,’ details about FX’s upcoming third season of the scarefest ‘American Horror Story: Coven‘ will remain a hot commodity until series creator Ryan Murphy and the network deem it so. Even so, we know that the new season will feature a less overtly dark tone than its predecessor ‘Asylum,’ so what does series star Sarah Paulson have to say of their witchy new world?

“The most extraordinary thing about Ryan Murphy is his love for telling a woman’s story and he has assembled an extraordinary group of actresses for the story we are going to tell next year,” said Paulson to ETOnline of the upcoming season, set to bow on FX this October. “What I can say is that I think this season is going to have a bit of a more of a hybrid tone — some of the lightness and humor from the first season as well as some of the bigger themes of female empowerment.”

In particular, Paulson previewed that ‘Coven’ would continue Ryan Murphy’s prevalent themes of disenfranchisement among outcasts, specifically in a more modern context. We do know that the third season will be set in the modern day across several cities (primarily New Orleans), and will occasionally dip back into the past as the story requires.

‘American Horror Story: Coven’ will also welcome newcomers Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Patti LuPone, Gabourey Sidibe and Kathy Bates, along with returning franchise regulars Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Evan Peters and (obviously) Sarah Paulson. Prior series stars Zachary Quinto and Dylan McDermott have not been confirmed to return, and may sit the third round out if scheduling falls through.

Well, what say you? Are you as anxious as we are for an insight into ‘American Horror Story: Coven?’ Do you think the series would do better to return to a lighter tone?
