Benicio Del Toro just made the best move of his career — the actor is in talks to join Paul Thomas Anderson‘s ‘Inherent Vice‘ alongside Joaquin Phoenix.

If The Wrap is to be believed (and they typically are), we should probably get ready to forgive Benicio Del Toro for ‘The Wolfman.’ The actor is in talks to join Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Inherent Vice,’ which stars Anderson’s ‘Master‘ star Joaquin Phoenix.

The film, based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, is set in Los Angeles in 1970, where a pot-smoking private detective (Phoenix, obviously) named Doc Sportello (coolest name ever?) investigates the case of a kidnapped girl. Del Toro would play the role of Sportello’s attorney, who’s constantly trying to help get the private eye out of a bind and offer good advice — though he’s not a legitimate lawyer. The description of the role calls to mind Del Toro’s part in ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ in which he played Dr. Gonzo, “lawyer” and “adviser” to Johnny Depp‘s Hunter S. Thompson character, Raoul.

The part, although rather small, is said to be a scene-stealer, something of which Del Toro is definitely capable. And watching Del Toro and Phoenix interact with each other in a film about a pot-smoking private detective? That sounds pretty mind-blowing.
