Black Sabbath Offer First Look at New Stage

Black Sabbath stage setup

Legendary metal pioneers Black Sabbath are gearing up for a new tour in advance of their forthcoming album, and from the looks of their stage setup, it’s going to be an old-school classic show — not just musically, but visually too.

The group shared the above picture on Instagram last night along with the caption, “Time for the final rehearsal before the tour kickoff show tomorrow in Auckland, NZ.” Sabbath will perform at the city’s Vector Arena on April 20 and 22, followed by three dates in Australia to round out the month. The group will also play a single date in Japan in May before their reunion album, ‘13,’ comes out on June 11. The album’s first single, ‘God Is Dead?,’ was released yesterday.

The tour will then visit the U.S. for a string of dates in August and September. The stage set looks like it could have been lifted straight from the band’s peak era. It features a twisty tree motif, amp stacks and many of the visual elements from Sabbath’s past for a dark, murky look that makes a perfect setting for their music. Curiously, it appears that the band might be using old-school speaker monitors instead of in-ear monitors onstage.

So far, there’s no word on the set list, but hopefully it will include a sizable slice of the band’s new record. Guitarist Tony Iommi recently said, “I could never have imagined that the album would turn out so well, but it has. I think it sits comfortably with our first three albums — ‘Black Sabbath,’ ‘Paranoid’ and ‘Master of Reality’ — and I think it’s one you’ll like. We wanted it to sound like the way we played in our early days, back to basics, and we recorded pretty much all of it almost live as a band.”
