Brad Pitt on ‘World War Z 2′ – ‘We Have So Many Ideas’
If you had brought up the idea of a ‘World War Z 2‘ to Brad Pitt and Paramount Pictures just about six months ago, they may have laughed you out of the room. The zombie movie had a famously difficult production with costly reshoots leaving many Hollywood insiders thinking ‘World War Z’ was going to be a massive failure. But then the film hit theaters, it turned out to be a pretty good movie and the movie has made over $200 million to date. So, who’s laughing now? Certainly not Brad Pitt who says they have “so many ideas” when it comes to prepping the inevitable ‘World War Z 2.’
Brad Pitt doesn’t do many sequels. Besides the ‘Ocean’s 11′ films, he has never starred in a sequel to one of his movies and ‘World War Z’ was a conscious effort by Pitt and his production company, Plan B, to start a franchise. And with the surprising success of ‘World War Z,’ it looks like they’ve found that franchise.
Pitt was in Toronto promoting his latest film, ’12 Years a Slave,’ and confirmed to Variety that ‘World War Z 2′ is in development and they’re working out their plans now:
We’re certainly talking about it, yes. We have so many ideas on the table from the time we spent developing this thing and figuring out how the zombie worlds work. We gotta get the script right first to determine if we go further.
“Gotta get the script right…” What a novel concept! Part of the reason the original film had such a troubled production, was the script, which resulted in a third act that wound up being completely rewritten and reshot after filming had wrapped. We can certainly see where Pitt and Paramount would be interested in another ‘World War Z’ movie, but only with the right talent involved and the right budget.
Considering they feuded regularly during filming, we’ll guess director Marc Forster won’t be back working with Pitt. And with the studio happy with the ending that Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard wrote, perhaps they’ll be first in line when it comes to working on the ‘World War Z 2′ script.
Originally, ‘World War Z 2′ would have been very different. The original ending of the movie had Pitt taking up shop in Moscow where he comes a seasoned zombie hunter (complete with a giant beard), realizing that cold is the key to defeating the zombies. But, as he realizes this, he gets a call from the U.S. where he finds out his wife has been taken as a sex slave by a soldier (played by Matthew Fox and glimpsed very briefly in the theatrical cut). The movie would’ve ended with Pitt storming the Oregon shores, D-Day style, on a mission to save his wife.
So while that ‘World War Z 2′ would’ve had more to do with a personal rescue mission, we’ll guess this new ‘World War Z 2′ will have more to do with fighting off the zombies and defeating the zombie plague for good.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to a sequel?
