This American rap artist was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. At the age of five years old, she moved to Queens, New York, where she grew up.

She attended Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School, where she played the clarinet in band. She graduated from LaGuardia High School, an institution that specializes in music and the performing arts, where she took part in the drama program.

She got her start in the music business in 2007 recording mix tapes, most of which were released by Dirty Money Records. At the 2008 Underground Music Awards she was given the Female Artist of the Year award, before releasing another mixtape in 2009 on the Trapaholics record label.

In 2009, Lil Wayne discovered her and helped her to secure a record deal with Young Money Entertainment, with distribution from Universal Motown Records.
