Cheap Trick will rock the nation’s capitol on this coming Sunday, April 22. The classic rockers are part of the entertainment for an Earth Day rally on the National Mall in Washington D.C., which according to the band’s website runs from 12PM to 7PM ET.

The ’70s and ’80s rockers will hardly be the only celebrities in attendance. Amongst the tens of thousands of people expected to enjoy the exhibits and demonstrations are professional athletes and politicians. Reverend Jesse Jackson will also be a part of the festivities although it’s not clear how.

The first Earth Day was in 1970, and the organizer of that inaugural holiday — Denis Hayes — will be speaking. There’s also an “EcoVillage,” renewable energy demonstrations workshops and booths run by NASA, Kids vs. Global Warming, Solar City and Climate Change.

Dave Mason and Kicking Daisies will also perform on Sunday. Two years ago Sting and Jimmy Cliff were the featured performers and tens of thousands swarmed the mall to be a part of the fun. The Associated Press reports that the event wasn’t held in 2011 because of the economic downturn and because the holiday fell on the same weekend as Easter and Passover.

Cheap Trick will be helping to encourage “acts of green.” Kathleen Rogers, the Earth Day Network president, says they hope to reach one billion commitments to walk to work, plant a tree or participate in environmental education programs across the globe.

“My favorite was a guy who broke up with his girlfriend because she wouldn’t recycle,” Rogers says. “We counted that as an act of green.”
