‘Chronicle 2′ Loses Original Writer Max Landis

Chronicle 2
20th Century Fox

It’s been in the works since last year, but ‘Chronicle 2‘ doesn’t seem to be making much traction. The sequel to the 2012 film, based on a script by Max Landis and directed by Josh Trank, seems to have encountered a new problem: Landis is no longer scripting the film, meaning that the sequel will not feature the original director or writer of the first film.

Max Landis gave a highly-anticipated update on the status of ‘Chronicle 2′ via his Twitter, but unfortunately it wasn’t the kind of update we were hoping for. Landis says that he’s been off the sequel for months now, and explains:

Ultimately, I’m just very grateful to Fox for making a film as close to my original script as Chronicle was.  For making the film at all. So yeah it’s sad that as of right now I’m not involved in the sequel, and don’t know what it’s about even, but ultimately I can’t complain…Chronicle 2 is still probably happening, just not with my involvement as of now.  It’s a bummer, but there are no real hard feelings.

We already knew Josh Trank wouldn’t return for the sequel, considering his duties on the ‘Fantastic 4′ reboot, but without Landis’ script, the sequel may be lacking the core of what made the first film so great.

‘Chronicle’ told the story of three high school kids who make an incredible discovery that grants them superpowers — and with great power comes great responsibility, etc. The film was a huge hit for Fox, considering how little it cost to make in relation to the box office gross, but it was Landis’ script and Trank’s direction that made the film come together so well.
