Courtney Love: ‘I Don’t Think the Yoko Comparison Is Fair’

With Nirvana‘s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just days away, it’s clear that Courtney Love is still in no mood for a public reconciliation with the surviving members of the band.

Love, who has battled openly with former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic in the years since her husband Kurt Cobain‘s death effectively dissolved the group, told the Telegraph that she’ll be on hand to accept Nirvana’s induction in order to retain “ownership of the mythology, rather than just handing over to Krist and Dave their ownership.”

Scoffing at rumors that she’d be performing with Grohl and Novoselic at the ceremony (“that’ll be the day”), she shared her scorn for a Nirvana exhibit that the duo established at the EMP Museum in Seattle, saying, “It makes them look like happy Monkees. Which isn’t the reality at all.”

Reminded that her membership in the contentious rock widows’ club has caused some to compare her to Yoko Ono, Love bristled a bit, saying, “I don’t think the Yoko comparison is fair, I never sat in on rehearsals. But Kurt thought Yoko was cool. He was an early adopter. He gave me a Yoko Ono box set when I was pregnant. Which I threw at his head. I wasn’t really a fan.”

Although she’s currently preoccupied with the release of an upcoming single, which she described as “magical, my best for an ice age,” as well as the prospect of a potential reunion with the classic lineup of her band Hole, she confirmed earlier reports of a potential stage musical inspired by Cobain’s life and legacy — which she vowed will reflect his artistic integrity.

“It’s more a play, conceived by a brilliant team,” she explained. “I can’t name names, but when you hear who is possibly involved, it takes on a new dimension. Otherwise it’s Vegas rubbish, and I will never allow it. There will be no jazz hands on ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’!”
