Daniel Hudson’s 2013 Topps Baseball Card Features Picture Of Him After Injury

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Daniel Hudson will never forget blowing out his elbow during a game against the Braves in Atlanta on June 26 of last season. In case he does, all Hudson has to do is look at his 2013 Topps Heritage baseball card, which features a photo of Hudson on the mound right after he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Ugh.

The intentionally retro 2013 Topps Heritage baseball card photo depicts Hudson’s obvious discomfort. While casual fans may not associate the pose directly with the injury, even a non-fan can see the then 25-year-old pitcher’s unflattering, worried expression. Hudson tweeted about the card after he saw it:

We’re pretty sure that the 1964 Topps set upon which the 2013 Topps Heritage cards are based didn’t use photos of players right after they were cut from the team, cheated on by their wife or told their dog was run over by a bus. C’mon Topps — this is worth a reissue!

Hudson is currently rehabbing with the Diamondbacks in spring training after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He had a promising 16-12 record with a 3.49 ERA in 2011 before struggling last season. For what it’s worth, Hudson’s regular Topps card is much nicer. Perhaps Hudson’s  2014 card back will include the saga of his 2013 Topps Heritage picture.
