‘Django Unchained’ Mysteriously Pulled From Chinese Theaters

Weinstein Co.

Despite being the second largest film market in the world after the United States, China still enforces strict censorship laws regarding what can and can’t be seen in its cinemas. The latest victim of Chinese censors is Quentin Tarantino‘s Oscar-winning ‘Django Unchained,’ which was yanked out of theaters on the first day of its release.

According to the New York Times, the extremely violent revenge western had already gone through significant edits to tone down the scenes of excessive violence, so the exact reason for the film getting pulled remain unknown. Speculation suggests that certain censors were upset by the film’s brief nudity, namely a torture sequence that lets the audience see all (and we mean all) of star, Jamie Foxx.

Although ‘Django Unchained’ was already a smash hit at the domestic box office, China’s ever-growing film industry has made it one of the top earners on the international scale. To not have your film play in China is to lose a whole bunch of money. Thankfully for the Weinstein Company, gears are apparently turning behind the scenes and a new release is in the works. Although we have to roll our eyes at China’s draconian censorship process, we’re just happy that Chinese film fans will get the chance to see one of the best films of 2012 in any way.
