Extreme’s Pat Badger Accepts the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Generally speaking, if your friends are the type of people who try to publicly shame you into dumping a bucket of ice water on your head, you might want to start running with a different crowd. But as you’ve no doubt noticed on Facebook this summer, the ALS Assocation‘s ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ is daring people to dunk themselves for a good cause — and Extreme bassist Pat Badger just accepted.

ALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — and commonly referred to as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ — is a progressive neurodegenerative illness that results in muscle weakness and atrophy, manifested in difficulty speaking, spastic muscle movement, and eventually, problems with breathing and swallowing. At present, a drug named Riluzole is the only method of treatment proven to lengthen ALS patients’ lives, and only by a period of months; scientists are currently pursuing clinical trials for a number of treatments that target recently discovered root causes of the disease, but there’s still a long way to go.

To that end, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge asks people to either film themselves getting dunked or to make a donation to the cause — and tag a few friends in the bargain. As you can see in the video embedded above, Badger manned up after being challenged, and has paid it forward by naming a few more friends. (He even went the extra mile by taking a bucket to the noggin when he let go a little too quickly after dousing himself.) Keep an eye on your social media feeds for your own challenge, and keep your fingers crossed that it comes soon; this isn’t the type of dare you want to accept after autumn.
