Flaming Lips Offer Up Bizarre Cover of the Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus’

Maybe the Flaming Lips decided to record a crazy, bass-heavy, guitar-free video for the Beatles psychedelic masterpiece ‘I Am the Walrus’ as a way to prepare for their upcoming New Year’s Eve concerts with Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band in their hometown of Oklahoma City. More likely, they’re weirding out in the clip because, well, that’s what they do best.

Remember, this is the band that made their 1997 four-CD (meant to be played simultaneously) project ‘Zaireeka’ seem positively mainstream by recording the six-hour-long song, ’6 Hour Song (Found a Star on the Ground)’ and the 24-hour-long track, ’7 Skies H3′ earlier this year. Not that it has anything to do with the wigged out cover of ‘I Am the Walrus,’ but ’6 Hour Song’ features John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son, Sean, reading the names of over 200 people who donated $100 to the project. Flaming Lips will release their final recording of the year, a 12-inch EP collaboration with Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band, at the New Year’s shows.

Of course, the endless songs and upcoming EP weren’t all the madness Flaming Lips indulged in during 2011 — not by a long shot. Here’s a list of their bizarre offerings:

February: ‘Two Blobs F—ing’ — 12 YouTube clips meant to be played simultaneously
March: ‘Flaming Lips 2011 EP’ — A multicolor vinyl-only collaboration with electronic artist Neon Indian
April: ‘Gummy Song Skull’ EP — A flash drive featuring four songs hidden inside the gummy brain that’s inside a gummy skull
May: ‘The Flaming Lips with Prefuse 73′ EP — A multicolor vinyl-only collaboration with electronic artist Prefuse 73
June: ‘The Soft Bulletin: Live la Fantastique de Institution 2011′ — a live in-the-studio recording of 1999′s ‘The Soft Bulletin’ contained on a flashdrive inside the marijuana-flavored gummy brain of a strawberry-flavored gummy skull and the ‘Gummy Song Fetus’ EP, featuring three songs on a flashdrive inside a bubblegum gummy fetus
July: ‘The Flaming Lips with Lightning Bolt’ EP — a multicolor vinyl-only collaboration with rock band Lightning Bolt
