In spite of what we were taught in school, Christopher Columbus didn't "discover" anything.  In fact, his most notable achievement was introducing the global slave trade.  Honoring him with a federal holiday is ridiculous.  Here are two far better reasons to celebrate.

For starters, today marks the 239th birthday of the United States Navy.  On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia voted to build and arm two ships in order to intercept supplies meant to fortify the occupying British forces. Today, the Naval fleet consists of nearly 300 ships and 4,000 aircraft carries stationed all over the world.

Here's something else more deserving of celebration than that scoundrel Christopher Columbus, today is also "National No Bra Day".  What better way to promote solidarity with the courageous who have battled breast cancer, than to encourage all adult women to unharness their breasts today?
