Any TV fan knows that all good things cinematic come in threes, so why would HBO’s collaboration with legendary director Steven Spielberg and Hollywood icon Tom Hanks be any different? Following 2001’s acclaimed mini-series ‘Band of Brothers’ and 2010 successor ‘The Pacific,’ the holy TV trinity has begun work on a third World War II mini-series, to once again adapt another historical account. Get the details on HBO’s ‘Masters of the Air’ from Spielberg and Hanks inside!

While ‘Lincoln‘ is sure to make director Steven Spielberg the king of the movies come award season, the legendary director is once again setting his sights on TV with frequent collaborator Tom Hanks. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the film-making pair will executive produce HBO’s third big-budget World War II mini-series, utilizing as source material Donald L. Miller’s nonfiction tome ‘Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany.’

Once again executive produced by Spielberg, Hanks and Gary Goetzman under Hanks and Goetzman’s Playtone and Spielberg’s Amblin Television, the as-yet-untitled mini-series is said to “explore the aerial wars through the eyes of enlisted men of the Eighth Air Force — known as the men of the Mighty Eighth.” THR also notes that ‘Justified‘ creator, ‘Brothers’ and ‘Pacific’ writer Graham Yost earlier expressed an interest in working with Spielberg and Hanks again.

The series is seen as a significant investment on HBO’s part, but as both previous efforts have proven, awards and prestige are near guaranteed. We’ll bring more more information as it becomes available, but are you excited to see another HBO WW2 mini-series from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks?
