For years Metallica has been amongst the toughest acts in hard rock, and now they’ve built a pair of sunglasses to rock hard in. James Hetfield has partnered with Sutro Eyeware to create the JH Sutro sunglasses, available in black or tortoise. The band’s merchandise page calls them Hetfield’s “ideal pair of sunglasses.”

The sunglasses feature a lot of technology those outside of Sutro haven’t heard of. Essentially they’re built to be stronger and more durable than your ordinary eye ware. The Metallica website says they will not lose screws, and have hinges that are 10 times stronger than a traditional hinge. They’re scratch resistant and protect from both UVA and UVB rays.

“James was very particular in what he was looking for and he just wasn’t finding it out there, so we sat down and after extensive prototyping we put his vision into this frame,” says designer Jeff Sand, according to Blabbermouth.

“(They’re) Built to look faster than a speeding riff and to handle the life of a road dog like me,” Hetfield says. Of course with that kind of technology and Hetfield’s endorsement, the shades aren’t going to be cheap. The price tag — $219.99 plus tax — is about the same as a lease payment on a new car.
