Pirates may not be perfectly in season these days, but Starz's 'Black Sails' will almost certainly beat NBC's 'Crossbones' to the punch. The pay-cable network has officially set a January 2014 premiere for its Michael Bay-produced series, adapting the early days of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island,' but will 'Black Sails' prove to be a bountiful haul, or an empty vessel? Get the latest on Michael Bay's new Starz series inside!

The first trailer for Starz's Michael Bay-produced 'Black Sails' certainly caught our attention, but it may be a while yet before we see the series proper. Via Deadline, we've learned that the Captain Flint-centric 'Treasure Island' prequel series will bow in January 2014, likely beating out NBC's own pirate drama 'Crossbones,' featuring John Malkovich as Blackbeard.

The series comes from ‘Jericho‘ creator Jon Steinberg, starring ‘Die Another Day’ villain Toby Stephens as the iconic Captain Flint and ‘Shameless‘ Zach McGowan, centering on the tales of Captain Flint and his men 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel. From the official description:

Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.
