Paul McCartney Albums Reissued as iPad Apps

If you’ve ever found yourself at a loss for what to do while listening to Paul McCartney albums, you may be excited to learn that the former Beatle has joined the growing list of artists reissuing older albums as iPad apps.

The Guardian reports that McCartney has reached back into the vaults and given the app treatment to five records: ‘Band on the Run,’ ‘McCartney,’ ‘McCartney II,’ ‘Ram,’ and ‘Wings over America.’ Following in the footsteps of acts such as Bjork, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, and Snoop Lion, each new edition will include “remastered audio tracks, interviews, rare photos, album and single artwork, and videos including rehearsal footage and documentaries.”

According to the report, the apps are selling at a price point lower than the one set for the straight reissues of the same albums at the iTunes store, which is a somewhat curious decision, given the added content involved. But on the other hand, given that we’re talking about records that have been remastered and reissued more than once, their sales success may be more dependent than most on establishing the perception of a bargain.

Either way, it’s a telling move for McCartney, who doubtless understands the figures touted in the Guardian’s article: “In 2003, music accounted for 100 percent of revenue on the company’s iTunes store — unsurprising, since music was all it sold. But by the end of 2013, apps represented 62 percent of iTunes spending, with music less than a quarter.” And with some similar releases bundling in-app purchases (like Crosby, Stills & Nash‘s monthly subscription fee), the potential for new revenue streams is huge.
