‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ to Star Christoph Waltz as Jack Sparrow’s New Enemy?

Say what you want about the franchise as a whole, but the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ movies really do have a knack for casting. Incredible actors (and serviceable movie stars) have filled virtually every role in the series’ large ensemble, so it’s no surprise that the upcoming fifth film is looking to cast a beloved thespian. Two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz is reportedly in negotiations to join ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5‘ as the latest villain to cross swords with Johnny Depp‘s Captain Jack Sparrow.

The news of Waltz possibly joining the cast comes from the Daily Mail, so take all of this with a gain (or a pound) of salt. However, his casting lines up with other rumors that have been swirling around this production, so we’re completely willing to buy that this is a thing that could happen. The same report also drops a few tidbits of information, including additional plot details that tell us a little about the villain Waltz would presumably be playing:

Jack and his team are in search of The Trident, which (Keith Richard)’s Teague holds valuable information to. The villain this time is Captain Brand, a ghost that wants the Trident so he can get his revenge on Jack. Brand believes Jack turned his brother Eric into a pirate, which led to his death.

So, Christoph Waltz as a vengeful ghost out to avenge his brother’s death? We can get behind that, even if it’s in another ‘Pirates of Caribbean’ movie. And while we’re here, the involvement of Captain Teague all-but-confirms the return of Keith Richards, so there’s that. The report also describes a new love interest, a “beautiful woman in her late 30s who is called a witch by some but is really an adept astronomer,” but it’s Bleeding Cool who says that Disney is interested in Rebecca Hall in the part. What’s most interesting about this character is that she’s the daughter of Geoffrey Rush’s villainous Captain Barbossa, which should prove, uh, weird for Captain Jack.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ will be helmed by ‘Kon-Tiki’ directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg and will arrive in theaters in 2016. If Waltz and Hall are going to officially join the cast, it should get officially confirmed sooner rather than later.
