In nearly 30 years of cross-dressing in the public eye, Dee Snider has had to learn how to laugh at himself. That ability came in handy on Thursday (Jan. 24) night, as the Twisted Sister frontman was the guest of honor at a roast at the Grove of Anaheim in Anaheim, Calif.

The Revolver/Guitar World Rock & Roll Roast of Dee Snider‘ featured many of Snider’s friends taking shots at the singer. Comedian Craig Gass noted that “Somewhere in America, there’s a county fair with an empty stage.” Eddie Trunk of ‘That Metal Show’ remarked that maybe Snider was able to stay fit after all these years by “running from good career choices.” And Scott Ian of Anthrax said that “Twisted Sister tribute bands don’t exist because no one wants to play the same two songs over and over.”

Snider’s roast was emceed by comedian/magician Penn Jilette, who was introduced by actor Mark Metcalf, the ‘Animal House’ actor whose appearance in the ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ video helped break Twisted Sister in 1984. In lieu of attendance, many celebrities offered video tributes, including Alice Cooper, actor Lorenzo Lamas and Gene Simmons.

The evening was a benefit for MusiCares, the charitable arm of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The organization offers programs and services to those in the music community who have been affected by medical, legal or drug problems. MusiCares holds a fundraising event and tribute concert every year before the Grammys where they honor someone for their musical and philanthropic works. This year’s honoree is Bruce Springsteen.
