Is Rod Stewart Moving Back to England?

Nearly 40 years after leaving his native Britain for America, Rod Stewart is considering a return to England. The rock legend will possibly make the move by the end of 2015.

“This place is still in my heart,” he said in the U.K. tabloid the Mirror. “We are planning hopefully on moving back in about 18 months so my kids can grow up here. It’s not definite. But this is where me and Penny, this is where we come from.”

Last year, Stewart and wife Penny Lancaster purchased Durrington House, 10-bedroom mansion in Harlow, Essex — the county directly northeast of London — for £4.65 million. It’s his second house in Essex. In 1986, he purchased Wood House, which was reported to be used by Winston Churchill as a safe house when London was being bombed during the Blitz. He and Lancaster currently spend approximately 90 days in Britain.

Stewart moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to escape the notoriously high British tax system. The title of his then-new album, ‘Atlantic Crossing,’ reflected that decision. In his autobiography, Stewart said that it so angered his friend Elton John that “he called me a traitor and put on Elgar’s ‘Pomp and Circumstance Marches’ at a volume so high that we couldn’t talk.”

Lancaster said that the family will retain their home in Beverly Hills, and will spent their time there during the four months of the year when their two children are not in school.
