If you hear sirens going off tonight around 6, don’t panic. The North Koreans have not unleashed one of their nukes.

If the weather cooperates, what you’ll be hearing is a test of the Yellowstone County emergency outdoor sirens. There are 24 outdoor sirens in all -17 the in Billings/Lockwood area, 2 ikn Laurel and one each in Broadview, Shepherd, Huntley, Worden and Custer.

Each siren is radio controlled activated from the Billings/Yellowstone County Communications Center. While natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, tornadoes or technological emergencies such as chemical spills, vapor clouds, or major industrial fires don't occur very often, here are a few suggestions on what to do when you hear the emergency siren.

1. Go inside quickly and calmly.
2. Close all doors and windows.
3. Turn on the radio to or TV to a local station for further information and instructions.
4. Turn off the furnace and air conditioner and put out fire in fireplace.
5. Go to a safe room in your home or business.

The tests will be conducted by Yellowstone County Disaster and Emergency Services. Each siren will be monitored by members of the Yellowstone Amateur Radio Club to ensure it is working properly.
