If you’re teaching your son how to use the toilet, here’s some sobering news.

New research has found that trips to the ER caused by falling toilet seats are on the rise and that most of the victims are kids.

Essentially, the injuries are caused when the toilet seat falls on a penis while someone is urinating.

Data shows such hospital visits have jumped by about 100 per year between 2002 and 2010. In 2010, more than 1,700 people had to go to the emergency room for toilet-related injuries to the groin, with 97% of them under the age of 8.

The study’s head researcher said the number of toilet seat falling on penis injuries could actually be higher, since a lot of parents probably don’t take their children to the hospital.

Earlier research had indicated as many as 16,000 people go to ER annually with genital injuries and that more than 13,000 injuries to the genitals resulting in hospital visits between 2002 and 2010 were caused by toilets.
