Metallica and Lou Reed's infamous 'Lulu' album will likely go down as one of the most universally panned releases ever. However, the rabid vitriol aimed at Metallica and Lou Reed in response to the album hasn't stopped Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett from being proud of the disc. In fact, Hammett calls 'Lulu' "some of the best stuff we've ever done" in a new interview.
Slayer frontman Tom Araya says that Metallica's polarizing collaboration with Lou Reed on 'Lulu' "was a little too much" and claims the band were "trying too hard to be cool."
Metallica and Lou Reed‘s ‘Lulu’ might have been one of the most savagely reviewed rock records of 2011, but don’t expect Lars Ulrich to take any of that criticism to heart. During a recent interview with the Brazilian podcast Wikimetal, Ulrich reflected on ‘Lulu,’ offering some candid thoughts on the album — and insisting that people have actually told him they liked it.
"This is for people who are literate," Lou Reed insists about 'Lulu,' his widely criticized collaboration album with Metallica. "This isn’t 'I cry in my beer cos you f---ed him and ran your truck through my bar."

Given the terrible reviews ‘Lulu’ has been receiving, Lou Reed & Metallica probably weren’t expecting stellar sales figures from the collaborative album. That said, they also probably didn’t foresee this: ‘Lulu’ sold just 13,000 copies in its first week out and an almost comical 3,000 is its second week, giving the disc a total of 16,000 units moved in its first two weeks out.
