32 Years Ago: Ex-Yes and Zeppelin Members Form Supergroup XYZ

By 1981, two of the most successful and influential British rock groups of the '70s -- Led Zeppelin and Yes -- had come to an end, and the members of each band were all looking for new opportunities. In April 1981, former Yes drummer Alan White and bassist Chris Squire got together with Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page for a proposed supergroup called XYZ -- which could have also included Robert Plant, but never quite got off the ground.

Yes Founding Guitarist Peter Banks Dead at 65

Pioneering British guitarist Peter Banks has died. Best known for his work as the original guitarist in the seminal progressive rock band Yes, the musician was a trailblazer in the progressive rock movement of the '70s that also spawned Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP and Jethro Tull. He passed away last Friday (March 8) at his home in London at the age of 65.

Yes and Genesis Members Announce Release Date for New Squackett Album

Here’s a riddle, of sorts. What’s a “Squackett?” No, it’s not some hybrid bird created in a lab, unless you want to get metaphorical and consider music a bird and a studio a lab. It’s what you get when you cross Yes bassist Chris Squire (who has played on every one of said band’s records) and onetime Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. The duo will release ‘A Life Within a Day’ on May 29 via Esoteric Antenna.
