‘The Mummy’ Reboot to Be a Modern-Day Horror Epic, Not Actually a Reboot

The Mummy

It has been a little while since any movement on ‘The Mummy’ reboot/remake made headlines. The last we heard anything about it was in September, when director Len Wiseman boarded the project, which already had ‘Prometheus’ scribe Jon Spaihts writing it. While there isn’t much in the way of significant progress to report on at the moment, today we do have some updates from Wiseman in regards to the project’s tone and style.

Speaking with Movieweb, Wiseman states that the new ‘Mummy’ is a present-day horror epic, unrelated to the Brendan Fraser trilogy that began in 1999.

It’s horror. Its epic. It’s more of a modern day version of what would happen if we came across a mummy in our world today. It is pretty fascinating.”

Wiseman makes it clear that the film “is not a remake of any kind,” but doesn’t really go into detail about what we can expect. However, we shouldn’t necessarily anticipate to see it anytime soon, as Wiseman isn’t even sure whether or not it’s his next movie. Plus, the script hasn’t even been written yet, as you’ll read in the quote below about the director’s attraction to the project:

The Mummy is one of Universal’s long standing, iconic characters, well before the Brendan Fraser movies. … This is such a different thing. What was attractive to me…There is still a script to be written, and all of that….But the pitch was to go with a much different tone. It was a Mummy like I’d never heard of before. Its nothing like what you would expect, at all, oddly. I was picturing Egypt, and the sand swept settings. The mummy wrappings. When I heard what they were wanting to actually do with it, it was shocking…”

Hopefully we’ll hear more about this soon, although it remains to be seen just how eager the masses are for another take on the bandaged monster. What do you think? Do you want to see ‘The Mummy’ shamble on screen once more?
