I just learned that sharing tips is against federal law. If you work someplace where some of your pay comes from tips, your employer can't make you share the tips that are given to you. I've always hated the practice of sharing tips with the employees who don't work as hard or do as good of a job as others.

If you're going to make it mandatory for me to tip 18 percent because my group was eight or larger, then I ought to be able to give extra to the folks who waited on me and made it an above-average experience.

If your boss is making you share tips, he's wrong.
