Always be wary of strangers offering free beer. Nineteen known and wanted criminals in Derbyshire, England, with charges ranging from robbery to sexual assault, learned this lesson the hard way.

All the criminals responded to a letter offering a free case of beer for calling a marketing company and answering a few questions. After a brief interview, a time and date were arranged for delivery of the suds. Obviously, instead of a glorious beer truck pulling into their driveway, it was the local police.

Authorities were willing to talk to the press about the sting even as the police continue to target more fugitives with free beer letters. This suggests that authorities in England are either really confident that a man’s lust for free beer impairs his better judgement or that criminals are huge suckers.

Probably a little bit of both.
