The ‘Warcraft’ Movie Could Land Colin Farrell and Paula Patton as Its Leads [UPDATED]
To be completely honest, we almost forgot entirely about the upcoming ‘Warcraft‘ movie until director Duncan Jones came out on that San Diego Comic-Con stage to present some test footage. Now a few months later, we finally have some idea as to who might lead this film.
According to Deadline, Legendary Pictures has extended an offer to Colin Farrell for a leading role, and Paula Patton (‘Baggage Claim’) is in negotiations for another lead. These castings are not fully cemented down, though, and Jones is said to be testing other major actors for leading roles.
Farrell arguably hasn’t had a solid movie since ‘Seven Psychopaths‘; his animated role in ‘Epic‘ and lead in ‘Dead Man Down‘ were less than desired. However, his upcoming work has us perking back up, with roles in ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ with Tom Hanks, and ‘Winter’s Tale’ with Will Smith and Matt Bomer. Patton has been in two major releases — ‘2 Guns‘ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.’
[UPDATE: Among the other names floated around for lead roles are Paul Dano (‘Prisoners’), Travis Flimmel (History’s ‘Vikings’), Anson Mount (AMC’s ‘Hell on Wheels’) and Anton Yelchin (‘Star Trek’).]
The avatar-based role-playing computer game is set in a medieval world of fantasy and myth. Although no official plot details are available, the test footage revealed an atmosphere similar in style to what we’ve seen from ‘Riddick’ and ‘John Carter’ — just imagine a hulking, CG orc with a tomahawk-style war hammer battling a sword-swinging gladiator instead.
‘Warcraft’ will begin production in January, 2014 for a projected release in 2015. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing the film for Legendary with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment, and a script by Charles Leavitt.
