Wisconsin Couple Prepared to Die After Getting Lost Leaving Yellowstone
Some people and families save for years to make the trek out to our beautiful part of the country. In this case the area was right outside Cody, Wyoming down the road from Billings.Mark and Kristine Wathke left Yellowstone’s northeast entrance on October 29th at about 4 p.m. They were on their way to Montana!
The route they took as tourists was the famed Beartooth Highway which at that time was closed for the winter. The Wathke’s claim they did not see the closed signs during their travels.
It didn’t take more than a couple of miles before they were lost and stuck deep inside the wooded area of the Beartooth Highway which has been closed since about mid-September.
After the days dragged on the Wathke’s realized that,
we thought we might die out there-Wathke’s
so they wrote letters to their family and friends and even recorded a “good-bye” message! Seven days later Troy Barnett, owner of K Bar Z Guest Ranch near Cody headed out on one of only two roads they could be stuck. Barnett drove his snowmobile about 20 miles and located and rescued the couple.
What a great and humbling experience for the Wisconsin couple on vacation and all in a days work for Troy Barnett, he said,
we help people off there quite a bit, it’s really rural up here, we’re just up in the mountains-Troy Barnett
