The Foo Fighters HBO documentary series "Sonic Highways" is my favorite television show right now, which is a bold statement. It really evokes an emotion in me that I haven't felt about music in a while and reminds me of the performers and songwriters who have had such a profound impact on my life.

And I'm not a big Foo Fighters fan.  When they first started 20 years ago, I never thought they would become one of the biggest bands on the planet.  But they have, due in large part to Dave Grohl.  He just seems so genuinely cool and passionate about music history and his place in it.

If you haven't been watching the series, 5 episodes have aired to date.  The series premiere was set in Chicago and featured Montana native Steve Albini, now a prominent record producer.  The second episode was set in Washington, DC, and featured another Monana native, former Bozeman resident turned punk rock activist Mark Andersen.

The third episode was based in Nashville, followed by another outstanding episode that profiled the Austin, Texas, music scene.  The latest episode studied the Los Angeles scene and included several amazing scenes with legendary Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh.

Walsh is one of many classic rockers who have  contributed to the new Foo Fighters album. The cameras show him preparing a solo for the latest Foo Fighters song "Outside".

Three episodes remain in the 8 part series.  This Friday's show features the Foo traveling to New Orleans.  The final two episodes will showcase Seattle, where Grohl first gained fame as the drummer for Nirvana, and New York. If you have HBO and you're not watching "Sonic Highways", you're missing out on the best programs of the year.
