Fall is officially in the air in Billings. The pumpkin spice is flowing, nights are getting nippy, the Beartooths got their first round of snow, and we’re digging out our favorite hoodies like long-lost friends. Trees are already flashing gold, and soon the annual backyard leaf avalanche will be in full swing.

Once again, the City of Billings is helping residents manage the great leaf migration with its seasonal Leaf Container Drop-Off Program, running October 13 through December 5, 2025. You’ll find containers placed at eight sites around town, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Can I Just Cram Leaves in My Regular Trash Can?

If you’ve only got a few bags, sure; toss them in your garbage bin. But if your yard looks like a maple bomb went off, you’ll need to bag them up and haul them to a drop-off site. Do not leave bags on the street; the city won’t pick them up, and your neighbors will give you that look.

A Few Leafy Reminders

  • Don’t rake your leaves into the street and hope they become someone else’s problem. It’s not legal.
  • Bag and securely tie your leaves before drop-off.
  • The containers are for leaves only, no branches, sticks, grass clippings, mystery yard debris, or trying to sneak in that old car battery you've been meaning to recycle.
  • Don’t use the leaf sites as a convenient spot to dump your household trash. You'd be surprised how many people do this. Don't be that person.

FUN FACT: Fall leaf debris collected by the City each year is enough to fill Daylis Stadium three feet deep.
