Investigation Underway After Teen Found Dead In Montana Lake
With people out and about enjoying Montana's wide-open spaces, accidents are, unfortunately, part of the reality. Whether it's hiking, floating a river, or spending the weekend camping, we live in a place where nature gives us a lot—but it also demands respect.
This year alone, we've already seen multiple grizzly encounters, a few people reported missing, and a heartbreaking number of deaths tied to our lakes and rivers. It's a reminder that while we're out here living the good life in the outdoors, safety always has to come first.
Sadly, another life was lost last week in one of our state's many recreation areas.
A 14-year-old boy from Gallatin County had been reported missing at Harrison Lake, also known as Willow Creek Reservoir, on the evening of June 18. Emergency responders were dispatched after Madison County Communications received a call for help locating the teen, who had gone missing during a water outing.
After five days of searching, the Madison County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Monday, June 23, that the teen's body had been found. Multiple agencies assisted in the search effort, using boats, sonar equipment, and trained search teams in the attempt to bring the boy home.
Harrison Lake will remain closed until the end of June 29th in honor of the family. The Madison County Sheriff's Office, in coordination with the Madison County Coroner, is actively investigating the details surrounding the incident

It's a devastating outcome and a sobering reminder of how quickly something can go wrong. Our hearts go out to the family, the search crews, and the community grieving this loss. As summer ramps up, let's look out for one another, wear life jackets, and never underestimate Montana's wild beauty—or its risks.
