The 23rd annual Shipton's Big R Pet-O-Ween event was a smashing success on Saturday when dozens of dogs and their owners displayed a smorgasbord of creativity on the runway for the festive pet costume contest.

Dogs took center stage this year, except for a pair of goats (who went on to win the medium-sized pet category). Absent was the usual menagerie of smaller pets. There were no hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, or chickens in the competition for 2024, with contestants vying for $75 Shipton's Big R gift cards and other goodies.

Dogs and humans had a blast.

For the most part, canines seemed to enjoy the festivities, with only a handful of dogs attempting to squirm out of their costumes. Attendees enjoyed free hot dogs, Barqs Root Beer, free pet food samples, and more. Many of the pet owners included themselves in the costume competition.

The winner of the "Pet and Owner" category was a clever costume that featured a dog with a pillow strapped on its back, with the owner sporting a fake mustache, slicked, black hair, and a blue shirt... it took me a moment to realize the theme was the My Pillow Guy. Pretty funny.

Our cameras captured snapshots of almost all of the pets as they scampered down the runway. We had our favorites, as did the judges. Scroll through and let us know your favorite costume! Drop us a message on the Chat button on our App, or leave a comment on Facebook.
