Some of the best birthdays are filled with surprises, revelry and guests -- and MontanaFair's 100th anniversary celebration will be no exception.

Usually, it's the guest of honor who is surprised.

Not this time.

Guests, otherwise known as fairgoers, are in for a surprise.

The fair is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a special presentation of the photos, stories, and memorabilia of MontanaFair, according to Ray Massie, marketing and sales director for MontanaFair. Curated by Darcie Winkler, the presentation is a 100-square-foot Memory Wall that will be placed near the main entrance to MontanaFair.

It will not be unveiled until MontanaFair opens Aug. 7.

On the Memory Wall, you'll find a treasure trove of historic photos and stories of the state's major events.

In spite of floods, wars, fire, or tornado, the fair in Billings has been held continuously since the first event in 1916. Starting as the Midland Empire Fair and becoming the Midland Empire State Fair, Yellowstone Exhibition, and finally MontanaFair, the fair was from the beginning one of the biggest agricultural exhibitions in the state. Today, it consistently remains the largest single event in the state.
