I stopped by my Laurel post office to pick up a couple of packages that were too big for them to leave in our mailbox. I was chatting with the gal behind the counter, asking her how they're holding up as the holiday package season starts getting into full swing.

She said they're not overly slammed at their location, but she thought the bigger post offices here in Billings and their distribution centers are starting to feel the pressure.  According to the USPS website, the post office will deliver 15 billion pieces of mail and 900 million packages between now and New Years Day! They say:

“The Postal Service is ready to deliver for the holiday season.  We have increased our operating capacity to include additional transportation and extended our delivery windows,” said Megan J. Brennan, Postmaster General and CEO. “Our dedicated employees are proud to deliver more packages to homes than any other shipper.”

This is not counting the UPS and FedEx crews that are working long hours over the next month too. When I call these delivery people "heroes," I don't mean to compare them to service members, veterans, firefighters or someone who rescues little Timmy from the well... but they certainly have my respect. Doing a long, tedious job to bring us all the junk we've ordered off the internet.
