Few Details Available on Weekend Shooting in Small Town in Montana

The Meagher County Sheriff is releasing few details into a deadly weekend shooting that happened on July 12, 2026, in the small town of White Sulphur Springs, Montana.

According to the report, the incident unfolded during the afternoon, and has left one individual dead, with one in custody.

Investigation Underway After Shooting Death in White Sulphur Springs

Law enforcement from the Meagher County Sheriff's Office received a call at 1:56pm on Sunday, with the initial report of a gunshot being fired.  Officers responded to the 202 West Main Street address in White Sulphur Springs, along with emergency service from the Meagher County Ambulance.

Once on the scene, officers and first responders found and one individual with a gunshot wound who died on scene.  Witnesses on scene were able to identify an individual on the property when the incident happened as a suspect.

Short Search Results in Capture of Alleged Shooter in White Sulphur Springs

Once the individual was identified, officers alerted other law enforcement agencies including Montana Highway Patrol and the Montana Fish and Game.  The suspect was quickly apprehended by authorities.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and in the early stages according to the statement from the Meagher County Sheriff: "Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, Montana Crime Lab, Montana Fish wildlife and Parks and the Montana Highway Patrol are assisting the Meagher County Sherriff’s Office with the investigation, which is in its very early stages. The Meagher County Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to respect the privacy of the families involved in this tragedy while they work through this difficult time."
