Well, it finally happened. Dollar General has officially opened its doors in Billings at 2402 Grand Avenue, right at Grand and 24th Street, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this has been a big deal in our house.

My Son Has Been Waiting for This Moment

I am the mom of a kid who is so excited about this, you’d think we just told him Disney was building a theme park in Billings. Every time we go East to visit family, one of his first requests is, “Can we go to DG?” That’s what he calls it, and it’s not a casual ask; it’s a must-do.

Now, yes, there's a relatively new Dollar General out on Highway 312 toward Shepherd, but if you live in town, you know that’s not exactly a quick pop-in stop. My son has been wishing for one closer to home for a while now, and that wish has officially come true.

A Store That’s Been Around Longer Than You’d Think

If you’ve never been inside one, Dollar General has actually been around for a long time, founded in 1939, and a staple in many parts of the country for decades, even if it feels like a newer trend here.

And here’s the wild part: while so many brick-and-mortar stores have struggled or closed, Dollar General has done the opposite, growing to more than 20,000 locations across the country as of 2025.

Affordable Everyday Essentials, Not Just Dollar Items

Despite the name, most things inside aren’t a dollar; it’s really more about value and convenience. You’ll find everyday essentials like milk, eggs, bread, snacks, cleaning supplies, and household items, all priced affordably and easy to grab without making a big trip to the grocery store. It’s designed to be that quick neighborhood stop when you need something without the hassle.

Something Tells Me We’ll Be Regulars

For a lot of people, this is just another new store opening, but for my son, this is the store. And something tells me we’re going to be making a lot more “quick stops” on Grand Avenue from here on out.
