Why Snow- Free Fire Hydrants Matter in Montana
Being part of a family with a deep connection to firefighting, I've developed a habit during wintertime of scanning my neighborhood for buried fire hydrants. My husband and I keep a collapsible shovel in our car and gladly take on the task of clearing out snow around any hydrant we come across one that isn't easily accessible.
The Crucial Importance of Clearing Snow around Fire Hydrants
Many people overlook the significance of clearing snow around fire hydrants. Yet, every second counts in an emergency situation. Spending a few minutes to dig out a fire hydrant could be the difference between saving a life or property and facing tragic consequences.
Insight from a Retired Fire Chief
As my friend and retired fire chief and Emergency Management Coordinator, Jeffrey Wentworth, has shared, snow accumulation can sometimes bury fire hydrants, making them nearly impossible for fire crews to locate quickly, especially during nighttime emergencies.
The Critical Role of Snow-Free Hydrants in Fire Response
When time is of the essence, every obstacle adds to the challenges faced by firefighters. Hydrants buried in snow or encased in ice create unnecessary hurdles that can significantly impact the swift response needed in firefighting situations. Clearing these hydrants translates to precious time saved and lives potentially rescued.
Observing Fire Hydrant Regulations and Responsibilities
Avoiding parking near fire hydrants and helping to be proactive in clearing snow-covered hydrants on or near your property is also so important. According to the Billings City Code, Sec. 24-472, “No person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant."

Shoveling out a snow-covered hydrant near your property, although not mandatory, could mean the difference between life and death. Again, imagine how awful it would be if firefighters needed to find a hydrant but couldn’t, resulting in the loss of property or even lives within your neighborhood. It isn't anything we ever want to have happen.
