Enjoy Soup for Lunch at Billings’ High Horse Saloon
On a cooler, wetter day, warm soup does a body good.
The High Horse Saloon and Eatery at 3953 Montana Avenue is a great place to decompress at lunchtime. The dimmer lighting rests the eyes and sets a more relaxed mood. The lacquered wood bar and tables adds to the warm atmosphere.
I had come many times before for their clam chowder, a savory spice-loaded soup I think was among the best around. A filling dish that had the only side effect of burps that tasted like the meal for the rest of the day. Not that it's a bad thing.
Bad News: clam chowder is no longer available. The chef who made it had moved on to other ventures. Darn, I'm going to miss that treat.
Good News: New soups are now available like this tomato bisque.
Every spoonful provides a rich burst of flavor. The creamy tomato is textured with nearly pureed vegetables, with a soft heat from spices. This is just the right amount to fill you up to keep going into the afternoon.
The nice waitress tipped me to a shredded carrot and sweet potato soup that she admitted, "I can't leave it alone." Will try that next time.
These two soups will definitely satisfy 2 or 3 servings of the veggies you're supposed to have for the day.
Now if you are a meat and potatoes person like me, I recommend the five chicken strips lunch with a hot crush potato. Won't need another meal until breakfast the next morning, though you may want an afternoon nap ;)
