Mail Threat Almost Reaches Montana’s Secretary of State

With the importance of the Senate race, the Presidency and the initiatives, no surprise some fools took extreme and very illegal action.

A suspicious mailing addressed to the Montana Secretary of State's had been intercepted before it could reach its destination last week.  This was one of many alarming packages, some containing a mysterious substance, sent to election officials in over 20 states, including Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.

Law enforcement made this catch, and now the U.S Postal Inspection Service and the FBI are on the case.

Not the First Time

Threatening mail is not new to the Secretaries of State and those in the Helena capitol.  Last summer, Montana lawmakers received envelopes with a harmless powder, just like their counterparts in other states.  May have been a prank to create a panic.  Later in November came another wave of letters to election officials, and some of them included fentanyl in trace amounts.

Trust Your Gut with a Weird Mailing

The FBI released a statement to MTN News on these incidents and added a tip for any agency worker.  "Exercise care in handling mail, especially from unrecognized senders.  If you see something suspicious, please contact law enforcement immediately."

And if you're legit, include your name and address.  Law-abiders should have no concern letting the addressee know who sent the parcel.  And you want a reply, right?

Rooting for the Postal Inspectors and FBI

Hope they track down these Unabomber wannabes.  Postal Inspectors are the most tenacious investigators in the nation; they have zero tolerance for crimes involving the mail.  And I support the judges throwing the book at the criminals.

Just because somebody has a problem with the election process does not mean they can endanger or even prank the officials.  Not Cool.

For anyone considering mailing suspicious packages or letters, here's a friendly suggestion: have your affairs in order, because you should look forward to a long stay in the federal prison system.
