Black Sabbath Turns Up in Metallica’s Latest 30th Anniversary Show Video Recap
James Hetfield wasn’t joking when he said Metallica had some “awesome, different surprises” in store for the fourth night of his band’s 30th anniversary celebration last month in San Francisco.
The guests on Dec. 10 at the Fillmore included Black Sabbath‘s Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, and their performance of “Paranoid” with Metallica is part of an authorized 44-minute video that recently hit the Internet.
The Metallica/Sabbath segment is just one of the clip’s many highlights. Early on, master of ceremonies Jim Breuer pulled off a funny impression of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. During the Cliff Burton tribute segment, current bassist Rob Trujillo told a story about preparing for his audition while crashing at Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin’s place. Late one night while practicing, Trujillo noticed a Burton photo, which prompted him to promise he’d do “the best job possible” if he got the Metallica gig.
The band’s set on Dec. 10 featured the new song “Rebel of Babylon,” which Hetfield promised will be available soon to the band’s fan club members “before everyone else, of course.” Other guests that night included former Metallica members Jason Newsted and Dave Mustaine.
