It's a sad day for headbangers.  David Brokie, the insanely creative frontman for shock metal icons GWAR, was found dead over the weekend.  Brokie had spent the past 30 years cultivating his alter ego Oderus Urungus.

Oderus Urungus was one of the most unique characters in rock history.  Born 28 million years ago on the planet Scumdogia, he was drafted into an elite group called the Scumdogs of the Universe.  After becoming too powerful on his home planet, he was banished to Earth.

It was on this planet that Oderus joined forces with Balsac the Jaws of Death, Pustulus Maximus, Jizmak the Gusha and Beefcake the Mighty.  Together they formed the band GWAR, which stands for "Gosh, What an Amazing Rainbow".

Over the years, the band released 13 studio albums and was even nominated for a Grammy in 1993 for "Phallus in Wonderland".  Behind an insanely violent and obscene stage show, the band built a cult following all over the world.  In GWAR's later years, Oderus became a highly sought after social commentator, appearing on many major media outlets, including the Fox News Channel.

Whether you liked their music or not, GWAR had one of the greatest stage shows in rock history. David Brokie was a breath of fresh air in a musical genre that often takes itself way too seriously.  RIP, Oderus.  Have a safe journey back to the planet Scumdogia.
