‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Circles Newcomer Maisie Richardson-Sellers
'Star Wars: Episode 7' has had so many potential cast members at this point that we just want to throw our hands up in the air, yell "Figure it out already!" and return only when director J.J. Abrams is ready to reveal his final ensemble. But alas, the draw of George Lucas' science fiction universe is too great and we can't help but cling to every scrap of information and ever rumor as if our life depended on it. The latest buzz circling around the internet is that relatively unknown British actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers is being eyed for a leading role.
The word comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who say that Richardson-Sellers is being considered for a role that may have her playing a descendent of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi master so memorably played by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy and played by a disinterested Ewan McGregor in the prequels. The details of the character remain unknown, but production is apparently seeking a "young black or mixed-race woman" for the part, which will be a nice change of pace for the generally lily-white 'Star Wars' universe.
If Richardson-Sellers does land the part, she'll join 'Girls' star Adam Driver as a mysterious villain and original trilogy cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew in the highly anticipated film. It would be a huge step forward for an actress with no screen credits to her name (and she wouldn't bring any baggage to the production), but we'll have to play the let's-wait-and-see game with this one. The film is set to shoot in a few weeks, but this is not the first time a potential cast member has leaked. The path to this movie is littered with the bodies of the young unknowns who were supposedly going to nab a major part.
'Star Wars: Episode 7' will open on December 18, 2015. Well, it'll open if J.J. Abrams can find a cast.
