It look as though the curator of the music for the upcoming film ‘Lawless’ has a fondness for a particular Velvet Underground song, as there are two cover versions of ‘White Light/White Heat’ that turn up on the soundtrack, due this Tuesday (Aug. 29).

Antiquiet reveals that one of the covers is done by Mark Lanegan, who has evolved quite a bit musically since his early ’90s grunge heyday with Screaming Trees. Over the last two decades, the singer has gotten into more rootsy music, appearing on three bluesy releases with Isobel Campbell as well as performing with Greg Dulli in the Gutter Twins. Here, the gruff-voiced Lanegan with his group the Bootleggers adds the perfect translation from the Velvet Underground’s trippy classic to a Depression-era rootsy feel.

The other version of ‘White Light/White Heat’ on the ‘Lawless’ soundtrack comes from bluegrass veteran Ralph Stanley, who sounds every bit his age and provides a solid interpretation of the song to fit the film.

The film, which stars Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy as Depression-era bootleggers, opens in theaters this Wednesday (Aug. 29), with the soundtrack arriving a day prior.
