Shane Victorino hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, at Fenway Park on Saturday to win the American League pennant and advance to the World Series. The Red Sox will host the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 on Wednesday night.

Down 2-1 to Detroit heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Red Sox started their rally with a Jonny Gomes double and a Xander Bogaerts walk off Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer. Jacoby Ellsbury then hit a one-out grounder off reliever Drew Smyly that Tigers’ shortstop Jose Iglesias couldn’t field cleanly behind second base.

The error loaded the bases for Victorino, who hit a blast off José Veras that cleared the Green Monster in left field and sent the Fenway Park crowd into a frenzy.

The Boston bullpen kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the final two innings to clinch the franchise’s third A.L. pennant in 10 seasons. Red Sox reliever Junichi Tazawa got the win, while closer Koji Uehara was named ALCS MVP. He notched three saves, including one in Saturday’s clinching game, while recording nine strikeouts in six innings pitched in the series.

Victor Martinez hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to account for the Tigers’ runs. Scherzer was saddled with the loss despite his second solid performance of the series. He struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits and two earned runs in six-and-a-third innings of work.
