Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played journalist Lester Bangs in the acclaimed 2000 rock film 'Almost Famous,' was reportedly found dead today in his New York City apartment.

According to Screencrush, police are investigating a drug overdose as the cause of Hoffman's death. His previous struggles with addiction are well-documented and included a stint in rehab last year. The actor won raves for his performances in dozens of great and popular movies, including '25th Hour,' 'Capote,' 'The Master' and last year's smash 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.'

But to classic rock fans, he's perhaps best known for his work in 'Almost Famous.' In his role as journalist Lester Bangs, he serves as a wise if cynical long-distance mentor to the film's young protagonist, budding rock journalist William Miller, in a semi-autobiographical tale written and directed by real life Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe. You can see some of his best scenes from this movie below.
