Billy Joel Reveals Experiment With Heroin, Thoughts On Forming A Supergroup

Billy Joel says he once tried heroin, but that the powerful drug “scared” him. The 64-year-old later put the experience into perspective with the song ‘Scandinavian Skies’ off his 1982 album ‘The Nylon Curtain,’ but he never returned to that particular experiment.

“This was back in the late Seventies, I think,” Joel said, during a town hall-style interview on Monday with Howard Stern as host. “We were in Amsterdam, and there was all this stuff going on, so I said ‘Let me see what this is like.’ It got me so high I didn’t know how to deal with it. You just get way out, just go to another place, and you’re into the blues. All you want to hear is the blues. You start drooling, and you get sick.”

The rangy talk included several other intriguing tidbits about his career, family and childhood — with Joel also revealing that he considered starting an all-star band featuring Sting, Don Henley and “another guitarist”: “I liked being in a band,” he said. “Someday we might put together a silly supergroup.”

The three-hour talk, which aired live on Howard’s SiriusXM show, also included performances of Joel classics by the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Tony Bennett and Pink — the latter of whom duetted on ‘She’s Always a Woman.’ The next show in Joel’s on-going residency at Madison Square Garden is set for May 9, his birthday.
