Much has been made of the fact that many rock songs share the same chords — and even the same chord sequences — and mapping out that shared DNA is one of many fun discoveries for beginning guitarists. As guitarist Jared Dines points out in a video recently uploaded to his YouTube channel, the difference often lies in how those chords are played.

The clip, titled "10 Classic Riffs in 10 Styles," shows you how different some of rock's best-known songs sound when performed at other speeds and in other contexts — starting with the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic "Sweet Home Alabama" done as a power metal song and continuing down a list that includes a doom metal version of Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," a punk take on Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" gone thrash and more.

It's all a lot of fun, and if you like what you see here, you can check out some of Dines' many other tongue-in-cheek instructional videos — then sample the music of his band Dissimulator by visiting their Facebook page or playing clips from their two albums on iTunes.
