Back in October of last year, Chinese stuntman Kun Liu was killed on the set of ‘The Expendables 2‘ when a stunt involving an exploding boat went wrong. Yesterday, the man’s parents filed suit in Los Angeles County Court against the film’s producers saying unsafe conditions on the set directly led to their son’s death.

None of the film’s principal actors were on set when the accident occurred and none are named in the lawsuit. The suit names Nu Image and Millennium Films plus stunt coordinator Chad Stahelski (who was also acting as the Second Unit Director on the day of the accident) as the parties responsible for the death of Liu.

According to the suit, the film’s producers–

–recklessly organized, planned, set up, produced, directed, trained, coordinated and otherwise prepared for and implemented the stunt which involved the use of explosives and other similar ultra-hazardous activities in the rubber boat so as to cause an explosion, thereby injuring [Liu] and causing his death.

At the time of the accident, Millennium Films released a statement saying, “It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.” They have no comment on the lawsuit, which is not expected to impact the film’s release next month.
